ARTIST DEVELOPMENT

DIRECTORS ACTING
TARRAGON FAR STUDIO
FEBRUARY 7 - 12, 2011

Directors Acting was a week-long workshop that offers Emerging Artists the opportunity to hone directorial skills through active learning. So many directorial workshops are academic in nature Theatre Smash wanted our participants to get up on their feet and explore directorial methods in a hands-on way.

Micheline Chevrier (Shaw Festival, National Arts Centre, Great Canadian Theatre Company) lead a group of 14 Emerging Artists in a week-long exploration of Euripides' Hekabe. Micheline cast each artist in a role (or roles), and the week was spent in rehearsal. Participants learned about Micheline's process, as well as what it is like to be an actor an invaluable lesson for any director.

Theatre Smash's program is based on a similar workshop lead by the UK theatre company Living Pictures. Living Pictures senior directors in the past have included Ian Rickson, Dominic Cook and Mike Alfreds.
